Aristocracy has a history of being capricious. The legacy of those whims has been huge. An example of this is El Capricho, a 14-hectare garden in Madrid which dates back to 1784. The garden houses many interesting places to discover, such as a labyrinth, flower beds, beautiful buildings and surprising nooks. Each path offers something new and breathtaking to see.
“The Whim” is a jewel of Romanticism and a monument to 18th-century taste. Building work was begun in 1780 on order of the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, the most cultivated couple among the aristocracy of their time, supporters of the ideas of the enlightenment and patrons to many artists. Jean-Baptiste Mulot, a French gardener who had worked for Marie Antoinette, was the head architect.
